Men’s 1st X1 vs Rotherham (Away) - Saturday 22nd September 2007
The Chester Troops emerge Victorious!!
Rotherham 2 - 4 Chester
Goals - Matty Hyden, Johnny Roper, Phil Roper, Pete Evans
MOM - Matty Thombs
Narrowly missing promotion last year Chester men's 1st XI began the new season with an away trip to Rotherham under the guidance of new captain Andy 'The Colonel' Murphy.
A new younger, leaner and fitter side with league debuts for John and Phil Roper, were to face a physical Rotherham side relegated from the Premier division last season. Chester made a strong start, putting early pressure on the home side who's defence was breached after good running from Pete 'The Helmet' Evans had put Mat 'The Slightly Tubby Goal Machine' Hyden through to notch the first of many goals for last season's prolific top scorer. Rotherham then equalised with a short corner goal but Chester quickly responded with a Cafu like run and goal from right back by John 'The Groper' Roper to keep Chester ahead at half time. Chester defended well with strong performances from The Colonel, Matty 'Go Go Gadget Arms' Thombs, Phil 'The Wall' Lynn and veteran keeper Paddy 'Ping Pong' Bingham, but Rotherham again drew level after half time following another penalty corner strike.
Chester dominated remaining play through Bond, Tester and Veteren Gary Speed in midfield but were struggling to create chances until Phil 'Miracle Grow' Roper scored with a clever reverse stick strike. The Mini Colonel went close to extending the lead soon after half time and Chester maintained control to finish the game off with a penalty corner where Hyden was denied a second by Evans' poaching. Chester win 4-2 to go top of the league with a strong performance. The Colonel was suitably impressed.
